“Summer is the season of the sun, light and expansive energy,” says Spiritual Wellness Educator and Author of Let Your Fears Make You Fierce, Koya Webb, whose ten-minute meditation incorporates these elements to help you energize, ground and soothe your soul to a sunshine state of mind.

A simple act of sitting in silence is daunting for many, but the amazing benefits are forsaken in the name of fear of not being able to stop your thoughts while trying to meditate. Wellness expert, Koya Webb says, “By using meditation with more sensorial elements such as water, earth and sunlight, you are guiding and directing your mind intentionally, rather than having your mind take over your practice”. It also helps to bring these earth elements such as a glass of spring water, some flower petals or wood to a space dedicated to your practice, to ground yourself to that space.”

Although mindfulness and meditation can be done at any time of the day, the most powerful times to meditate are at sunrise and sunset. “Meditating during these times helps align your body to the natural rhythms of the Sun and it is also when your mind and subconscious are most receptive and fluid” explains Webb.

Let’s get started by finding a comfortable position to hold for ten minutes while maintaining awareness for the duration of the meditation.

RELAX (2 MINUTES):

“Dedicate the first two minutes of your practice to settling into your body. When the body is calm, it is easier for the mind to find stillness.

Now try a series of breaths: Inhale for 5 counts and exhale for 8, until you feel settled.”

RELEASE (2 MINUTES):

“After your breathwork, bring to mind anything in your life that feels ‘heavy’ or carries ‘weight’ that you would like to release. Imagine rainwater or a waterfall coming down and washing away all your worries and anxieties.”

GROUND (2 MINUTES): “After releasing, ground your body in the Earth. See the rainwater with your worries being received by the Earth and imagine roots extending from your spine and feet deep into the cooling ground, stabilizing and nourishing you.”

ENERGISE: (2 MINUTES):

“Now that you are grounding, bring your mind’s eye to the Sun. whether you can see it or not, despite the clouds or weather, the Sun is always radiating its light towards you. Imagine that its rays are touching you now, filling you with energy and vitality, like a battery being charged.”

PROTECT (2 MINUTES):

“Close your meditation by imagining the sun’s light (with which your body is now charged) surrounding you like a big orb, extending in all directions. This orb is protecting you and filtering any energies and emotions coming in or out.

End your practice with gratitude for these elements of water, earth and sun and anything else that you are grateful for.

Conclude with an intention for the day.”

Hasn’t this ten-minute meditation got you to have the sun shining out of you? Happy Radiating!
